Choosing Kiosks, Indicators and Terminals: The 10-Client Rule
When choosing branch hardware, the question is usually "which brand?". The real deciding factor, however, is how many clients will run simultaneously.
Hardware components of the system
A typical installation includes kiosk and touch terminals, counter PCs, LED / LCD indicators, queue boards and call screens. Some of these devices communicate over the network, others over serial lines such as RS-485.
The 10-client rule
The default configuration is optimised for 10 web-based indicators and 1 web-based main display. For this load, at least 4 GB memory (16 GB recommended) is sufficient on the branch server. If more clients are planned, the hardware must be upgraded.
If LED indicators are used
In installations using LED-based indicators only, the resource requirement drops noticeably: in this scenario 4–8 GB memory is sufficient, because LED indicators create no image processing load.
While choosing
- Decide the indicator type: web-based screen or LED indicator?
- Settle the client count (default target: 10)
- Enter the terminal count; device sets can be created automatically
- For touch kiosks, choose screen size and resolution according to the site
The hardware list is produced in the definition screens of the queue software. The right starting point is not buying devices but settling the terminal and indicator counts.
